When it was built, it was an engineering marvel, and a testament to one man's stubborness. Hugh Morton fought the federal government for years, keeping the WPA project Blue Ridge Parkway stalled until the US agreed to engineer a zero-impact bridge around his beloved Grandfather Mountain, rather than drilling and blasting part of the sides away. RIP Hugh Morton, 1921 - 2006.
